Mister Wibble

Doctor, you'll be the death of me

Shocking to hear of the clinic in Las Vegas, Nevada, which was shut down last Friday after state health officials determined that six patients had contracted hepatitis C, because of unsafe practices including clinic staff reusing syringes and vials.

A very close friend has been exposed to this and other diseases - such as hepatitis B and HIV - and awaits news regarding the level of risk posed to him. More than 40,000 people in the Las Vegas area are similarly exposed due to the shoddy clinical standards of the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada.

The head of the clinic, Dr. Dipak Desai, purchased space for an open letter in the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Sunday in which he expressed "my deepest sympathy to all our patients and their families for the fear and uncertainty that naturally arises from this situation."

Well whoopee, Dr Desai. I tend to believe the reports of comments from your staff to health investigators that you ordered the re-use of syringes and vials to cut corners and ultimately reduce costs. Whoever is directly to blame - you or your staff - it is blatantly and painfully obvious that you do not give a damn about clinical governance and protecting the health and safety of your "customers". I imagine you have some quite splendid holidays though.

Fortunate then, that the epidemiology department of the Southern Nevada Health District spotted the unusual cluster of Hep C cases which sparked the investigation. Had this been left to private monitoring, one can't help thinking that the already huge scale of this may well have reached unimaginable proportions.

This is all too late for my friend, and an unknown number of people in the Las Vegas area, who now face months of worry and possibly years of serious ill health and expensive treatment.

I seriously worry that this kind of event is just waiting to happen here in the UK. Meanwhile, the creeping privatisation of our health service persists. and managers continue to steer health care provision towards cost targeting. When I heard a manager recently discussing care pathways for vulnerable people in the mental health sector, I quietly died a little inside each time he used the simple but illuminating words "through-put".

Anuerin Bevan spins on.

Similarly, with MRSA here, who is taking responsibility and when? And what about E coli, there are many minefields here too, Anuerin will be turning in his grave.
